Consumer power… where?

It is news like this that make me sad.

Two mediocre games are battling it out on who is selling more units and how awesome they both are in the eyes of their creators.

Neither has lived up to the hype and no reviewer I follow has been excited about them. In fact, they have been disappointed, at the missed opportunity, at the over hype before launch and baffled by the consumer’s lack of restraint that just bought it on … I want to say trust (of the developer or the information provided) but should say hype.

I’m sad because this is not the way to get the games we deserve. This bit of news is ALL that companies care about, lest we forget what Egosoft were saying at the launch of X:Rebirth:

Secondly, I would like to say how amazed we all are here by the huge success of the game. Number one on Steam for several days in a row at this time of year when the big hitters come out… wow, we never expected that. It’s crazy to see that more than 10,000 people are playing our game at any one time on Steam (even more if you include those who are in offline mode). Madness!Egosoft’s Director Bernd Lehahn

I do not know how utopic it is to hope for a general public that waits for the reviewers to do their jobs and educate us on how good or bad a game is. But I am praying for it…
