Tears for the dead

I don’t know why, but Star Wars Galaxies has been murdered! I cannot even be certain of when the conspiracy first started and I don’t know how people were deceived in believing that this change would be a resurrection.

For how else can you describe the abolishment of the BEST class system ever and its replacement with a simplistic level system where abilities are only enhanced and nothing new is introduced? Levels might be 80 now, but there is no diversity. One commander is the same as the next.

What do you call the abolishment of a long time standard in MMORPG that every player can be a master of a craft? Only one character now can be a crafter and because items never break, there is no crafting to be done after the first one. Add to that the fact that mobs drop better loot than any crafter can ever make and you realise, crafting is dead.

How do you explain the shift from a normal, tried and successful targeting system to that of an FPS without changing aggro rules, adds and mob reactions? Peculiarly, mobs never have trouble targeting you, while you are trying to hit only one target, moving all over the place and you are afraid to hit him because you might hit one in the background and pull them all on you. Also mobs seem to KNOW that with the new rules you cant shoot worth a damn so they are going back right in the thick of their friends. Now they can shoot at you as much as they like and you can never shoot because you will hit something else.

Ask yourselves why there is no screen that lists your pilot XP, even though you gain it with every kill in space! That’s right, no more pilot class, hence no more time worth spend flying as you will never have anything from this expansion! In effect, Jump To Light Speed has been cancelled and has been replaced with an “action” space target range.

Star Wars is a heavyweight, at least to those that saw the first (chronologically) three. There were a lot of expectations and the original game fulfilled them to a large degree. We could forgive bugs, disappearing harvesters, lag. And we also forgot. I forgot.

I forgot the reasons I left it. I forgot the mass teleportations of legal protesters by the GMs. I forgot the bad public relationship techniques. I forgot it all, on a promise that the game I cared for would get a face lift. I forgot it all when I learned that the head PR was fired. And I hoped. I bought The Starter Kit in hopes of being reunited with that amazing class system. I wanted to go out in the field and start prospecting again. To set up my one harvester and make money for another and then get a medium one, and finally heavy ones. I wanted to get up the sniper tree again, blast by blast, and watch my class grow, the way I wanted it to grow.

I saw nothing. I tried to craft and I couldn’t understand why I couldn’t. I wanted to raise my sniper score but I didn’t get any sniper XP. I wanted to command my own ship but I couldn’t see any pilot class progress screen.

I started to realize what they had done. And when I finally understood the level of betrayal, I never logged in again, even though I had 20 more days available. I don’t know who pulled the trigger, SOE or Lucas Arts. And I don’t care anymore…

  1. Well, I’m not a Dr., but thanks 🙂
Actually, only the Fantasy RPGs are what is left in the computer RPG gaming universe. And EotB is one of my most fond memories – besides pen&paper of course, but that was ages ago!

  2. You cost me £20… worst money we ever spent on a game I think. But we’re on our way of becoming true MMORPG connoisseurs 😉

  3. Ion, between the two of us, we have played almost everything that has come along in the last 10 years. Some lasted more than others, some much more, but we truly can say “We know about good MMOs”.
